Fresh From the Farm

Our regular Monday installments of Fresh from the Farm got a bit delayed this week because of the blizzard! On Saturday, during the storm, I snowshoed in to the farm check on all the animals. I couldn’t drive because there were several trees down on the roads, and in addition, the roads hadn’t been plowed yet. I had to dig out all of their gates from under the snow in order to get into their pens to feed and top up their water, which had frozen overnight after we lost power on Friday afternoon. Needless to say, they weren’t too interested in coming outside for some fresh air!

On Sunday, the roads were still closed, so I cross-country skied to the farm, did some more digging around the animal pens, and also cleared snow off the greenhouse. The snow had drifted up over 5 feet deep along the side of the greenhouse, and it was blocking all the sun from getting in. With the heaters out of commission, it was important to let the sunshine in to warm up the interior for the plants, many of which don’t do well when temperatures drop below freezing.

The last two days of warm weather have helped immensely, and now the farm is back on track and headed toward spring growth!
