Unplug…and Reconnect

As a mother of two young children, one of my greatest fears for them growing up in the 21st century, will be the proclivity to trade sociability for social media ability. Agreed, today’s youth are, in fact, wired differently, seemingly innately SM-saavy. I watch my Kindergartener in awe, navigating an ipad, in a manner that’s apparently instinctive. This is not at all surprising, considering the startling figure that children ages 8 to 18 spend an average of 7 hours a day fully-engaged by an electronic device. This is further reason I will forever underscore the magnitude good-old-fashioned fun plays in a child’s development – socially and emotionally. Fortunately for our children, Camp is a kind of a modern day Utopia, where kids can be kids, fully-liberated from the flurry of media pressures that serve to influence their actions, beliefs, values, opinions and ideas. Camp is a forum where adolescents exchange media consumption for an occasion to reconnect with themselves and their peers on a deeper lever, intuitively garnering attributes associated with humanity – compassion, empathy, gratitude and wonder.
