As the temperature continues to drop and our fall outdoor education season winds down, Burgess and Hayward staff have been working hard to finish various outdoor projects at Camp. Yesterday marked the completion of our brand new Teen Adventure Trips Base Camp pavilion, which will serve as a permanent covering for our program’s outdoor kitchen area. The space is 20’ X 33’ and was constructed by outdoor education and full-time staff. For any past Trips participant who can recall the large blue tarp that served as shelter from the elements and the moments when rain and wind tested its durability during meal preparation, I’m sure that the value of this new pavilion can be felt.
This pavilion is one of many changes that are occurring for our Teen Adventure Trips program. Aside from bettering our Base Camp living space, we have also added new Trips for 2014, including SCUBA diving, rock climbing, and a surf & sail combo program. We are also adjusting our existent Trips in ways that align with desires expressed in 2013 camper feedback evaluations. With the anticipation of an incredible summer to come, plans to enhance teen adventure, service learning and leadership are well underway.
