Fresh from the Farm

Camp Burgess and Hayward Mon 28, 2014

A week ago today, we welcomed the newest members of the farm family: three Jacob sheep! Jacobs are a very old breed, with literary and artistic evidence suggesting that their family tree reaches back nearly 3,000 years. Considered a “Threatened” breed by the American Livestock Conservancy, Jacobs are rare in the United States in spite of their hardy nature, beautiful fleece, and impressive horns. Both males and females have horns, and they can have up to 6!

Our sheep include two wethers (neutered males) and one ewe (female). Front and center is Morgan, the ewe, who is about a year old. The two wethers are both lambs born this spring. On the left of the picture is Sir Lamb-celot, and on the right is Merlin (can you see all four of his horns?).
