The Burgess Farm sets Camp Burgess & Hayward apart from other resident camps by offering interactive, real-world experiences at a working organic farm. The Burgess Farm was recently featured in the Seed Savers Exchange’s annual report as an exemplary organization providing garden-based activities.
The staff at Camp Burgess & Hayward continues to strive to incorporate STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) into their programming, which is inherent in the experiential agriculture-based learning taking place at the Burgess Farm. Planned, staff-led activities are designed to support skill and competency development, and the application of agriculture and academic skills. Campers and students are provided the opportunity to make informed choices in the areas of global agriculture, food, fiber and natural resources.
“My daughter came home from Camp, explaining to me why we need to eat better. And, then asked me to find out if our town had a local famer’s market,” says the mother of a Camp Hayward camper.
“I was stunned. I had no idea she would be learning so much, all the while having fun.”
