It’s Kindness That Counts.

Does kindness lie at the core of our capacities for virtue and cooperation?

by Meghan Hill, Director of Business Operations & Alumni Relations

In speaking with campers, alumni and staff over the past few years, I’ve noticed a recurring theme. I continue to hear that in addition to numerous other commendable traits, Camp instilled — and continues to instill — kindness. And, with kindness, a greater connection to themselves, others and the environment.

This got me to thinking that, yes, while I believe all of us have the capacity for kindness, compassion, respect and empathy, perhaps Camp really is a place where children truly learn to care, discover how they feel connected to their communities, and come to understand that they can make a difference in the world.

Dacher Keltner, director of the Berkeley Social Interaction Laboratory, investigates kindness from multiple angles.
