Fresh from the Farm

Camp Burgess and Hayward • Mon 03, 2014

Well, this weekend’s weather definitely brought an end to our growing season at the farm… I was expecting a little light frost, and instead we got a snow storm! While we didn’t see much accumulation, it was snowing enthusiastically for several hours on Sunday, and the overnight temps were in the high 20s. A few crops can withstand those temperatures (mostly the heavy greens like kale and chard), but the rest of the rows are now ready to be pulled and turned in for the winter.

The end of the growing season is always bittersweet: it’s sad to see all of your hard work going into the compost pile, and it’s tough to know that you won’t have fresh veggies for another six months, but it’s a huge relief to have the workload lighten up, especially as the days get shorter and colder.

So for now, we’ll say goodbye to peppers, tomatoes, and beans… we’ll see you next summer! And here’s the view from inside the greenhouse during the storm… I didn’t expect to see this for another month!
