Fresh from the Farm

Camp Burgess and Hayward Mon 10, 2014

Last week I posted about saving seed at Burgess Farm. This week, I’m happy to announce that Camp will be hosting a seed swap this weekend for the Cape Cod Food Hub! A seed swap is where farmers and gardeners get together and trade seeds. They might be extra seeds that you saved from your garden (for example, I went a little overboard when I was harvesting my kale seeds, and I think I might have enough to give a packet to every single gardener on the Cape), or they might be leftovers from last year’s seed packets that you bought from a company. They might be seeds that came from a variety of veggie that’s been in your family for generations and that no one else knows about, or they might be from the awesome new kind of tomato that you tried last year and you’re eager to share. Wherever they come from, and why ever you want to swap them, they’re a fantastic resource for other growers in your area.

If you happen to be on the Cape this Sunday, February 16, stop in at the Burgess dining hall between 3:30 and 5:30… we’ll have seeds to share (don’t worry if you don’t have any to trade – we’ll have plenty to go around!), a workshop about starting your own seeds indoors, and activities like making your own seed packets and threshing seed from amaranth flowers. Check it out!
