Fresh from the Farm

The last couple of days have been pretty chilly here at camp — daytime highs have been in the low 30s and nighttime temps have dipped into the teens! For the most part, the farm animals are good at keeping warm on their own: they’ve got thick fur, downy feathers, or snuggly hiding spots to tuck into when it gets so cold. But we have to help them out when it comes to their water, which has been freezing over in the last few days.

For the chickens and goats, it’s just a matter of hooking up last winter’s electricity supply to each of the pens and pulling out the old heaters. But for the rabbits, whose hutch got a major update this spring, it’s a bit more complicated! After considering several choices, we opted to build an extension of their hutch inside the greenhouse. This means that when it gets really cold, they’ll have the choice to come indoors using a little pipe through the wall. With new extension, they’ll get more than just non-frozen water: they’ll also get a new, larger space to hop around and explore, and they can choose from several different options for a spot to relax or sleep.
