Fresh from the Farm

Camp Burgess and Hayward Tue 02, 2013

Today we’re welcoming more members to the farm family – this time, it’s chickens! We did a rooster swap with a nearby fellow chicken-lover, because our little rooster was getting picked on by our big hens and her big rooster was a bit much for her smaller breeds to handle. The trade went off without a hitch (except for some undignified chicken-chasing) and June, the new rooster, is settling in nicely to the flock here at camp.

We also picked out six baby chicks to help fill in our flock. We chose three Araucanas and three Cuckoo Maran chicks yesterday, and they’re snug and happy in their brooder, where they’ll live until they’re big enough to join the rest of the flock outdoors. These ladies will add a bit of color to our egg cartons: Araucanas are known for their blue-green eggs, and Cuckoo Marans lay beautiful chocolate-brown eggs. Now we just have to wait six months for them to start laying (and enjoy their fluffy cuteness in the meantime)!
