Ways to help

Angelo had guardianship of his three nephews- CJ, Michael, and Ricky. The boys are
all Burgess campers and Angelo worked multiple jobs to give them the best life possible. The boys will continue living with Angelo’s sister and any donations will go directly to helping the boys in this troubling time.

The Birth of the Lambs

Angelo passed away this weekend. On leap day, after an entire day of mourning at sunset a lamb, Angel, was born. We had no knowledge the mother was pregnant. Then we woke up March 1st to a second miracle lamb named not only for the day he was born but also Angelo’s last name- March (Marchulaitis). They were born in the pen and shed Angelo built. Angelo’s kindness will remain with us forever.

Angelo’s Story

Sadly, Camp Burgess & Hayward lost a treasured member of our close-knit community over the weekend, when Assistant Maintenance Director, Angelo Marchulaitis, passed away in his sleep. Angelo began working at Camp in 2010. Known for his infectious kindness and ever-present smile, many referred to him as “Uncle Ang.” He dedicated himself to, not only the betterment of Camp, but also the betterment of the lives of those around him.

Born in Boston and raised in Plymouth, Angelo served in the military and then worked in construction in Clearwater, Florida for 22 years. He brought his craftsmanship and generosity of spirit to every corner of the Camp community. He touched countless lives. Every staff member, parent, and camper has seen him moving the luggage on check in day in between trips to feed the horses a sugar cube. If you’ve ever swam in Spectacle Pond, you can thank Angelo for endless work of the docks, boats, and lifeguard chairs. Every fence that has been built, every road that has been plowed, every building that has been cleaned, every part of camp has a piece of Angelo.

Beyond his attention to detail as a member of the maintenance team, he was the kindest, gentlest, and most loving soul with all of Camp’s animals, from the horses at Hayward to the bees at Burgess. It was his vision and hard work that gave the goats their climbing structure, the ducks their pond, the bees their palace, and the rabbits their hutch. You could catch him yelling “Hey babies” outside the Burgess dining hall as the farm cats, Buffy & Wesley, came running. His presence will be truly irreplaceable on the farm and at the stables.

His selflessness was unwavering. He opened up his heart and home to anyone in need. His guardianship of his three nephews kept him on his toes. CJ, Michael, and Ricky are Burgess campers and often volunteers on any school vacation. They will be forever part of our camp family.

The Camp Burgess & Hayward staff will remember Angelo as a once in a lifetime gift to camp. We are infinitely grateful for the time we had with him.

In the Spirit of Camping,
Camp Burgess & Hayward
